Preparing for Storm Season

Our roofs and gutters are highly susceptible to damage caused by our wild weather particularly up here.

But these three basic tasks may offer some peace of mind.

  • HAVING YOUR ROOF PROFESSIONALLY INSPECTED

We believe the first step is to have your roof and gutters inspected to check on their condition and determine if anything needs replacing or repairing before any cyclones or bad weather arrives.

Things to take note of on a metal roof are:

  • Any rust either surface or severe rust forming holes

  • Any indication or cause you may have a roof leak

  • Poorly carried out patch repairs or silicon sealing by others

  • Any loose, missing or rusty screws or nails

For tiled roofs, things to look for:

  • Any cracked, chipped tiles or loose tiles that may have slipped

  • Any indication or possible causes of water leaks

  • Poorly repaired areas by previous owners, you should never have silicon on a tile roof

  • Damaged or cracked roof pointing

Also, you should be able to see from the ground if your gutters and downpipes are secured properly. If they’re not they won’t be performing as they should.

  • TRIM BACK TREE BRANCHES AND SHRUBS

Falling trees, branches and palm fronds can cause extensive and costly damage to your roof, so it’s a good idea to cut back any overhanging branches that might be at risk of falling.

If you have any trees or shrubs which are close to your roof line you will want to trim those back as well as this will help to reduce the amount of leaf litter that builds up in your gutters and downpipes.

  • KEEP YOU GUTTERS AND DOWNPIPES CLEAN

Following on from the above point, if your gutters and downpipes are full of debris, they won’t work efficiently and may cause blockages which wont allow the large amounts of water we receive to drain away properly.

As a consequence, this will dramatically increase the risk of water leaking into internal structures and damaging other parts of your home.

Roofus’ Tip: We recommend checking with your insurance company as to what they cover in relation to roof damage from a cyclone or storm.  Insurance companies will probably not cover you if your roof has not been properly maintained. Don’t find out the hard way after the event.
